To check the basic writing levels of Spanish language, the following facets need to be kept in mind:-
(1) Check for the correct usage of expression, as this reveals a writer’s familiarity with the language. An expression is a group of words that communicate a particular meaning. Some times, it is not possible to get proper expression in translation by exact translation. In that case, one has to convey the expressions in right terms of Spanish.
(2) Check for the correct usage of accents. Some times, accents of common words are ignored. The accent in a word may shift or disappear when it is changed from its singular to plural form or vice-versa.
(3) Check for the proper subject-verb agreement. To determine this, an advanced way is to check whether proper tense of a verb is being used.
(4) Check for the proper placement of an adjective in relation to its corresponding noun, and look for the correct agreement between the noun’s number and gender and the corresponding adjective. In Spanish, the adjective comes after the noun; the lesser level Spanish writers may accidentally put the adjective first.
(5) Check for the number and gender agreement. For example, "las canciones largas" equates "the long songs" in English. Because "canciones" is feminine and plural, its corresponding adjective must end in "as.
(6) Determine the writing level based on approximate level of writer’s peers and not in a detached or abstract standard.
(7) Check if too many elements of the paper appear to be directly translated without any real thought to rules. This may indicate that the student is simply writing a paper in English and getting it translated online through altavista.com.
Evaluation of Spanish writers can be divided into three categories:-
(1) Basic level: At basic level a person is able to understand the language and express himself in day-to-day activities, with usage of nouns and phrases. This is the starting level. The language is basic and the level of expression is beginners.
(2) Independent level: At the next level a person is better placed and his expressions and understanding of the language are better. His writing levels are also improved.
(3) Proficient level: At proficient level, writing levels are refined and mistakes are very few. The level of writing is good.
In the end, the level of writing level in Spanish language depends upon correct expressions, usages and adherence to proper grammar.
