How to avoid acidity

Hyperacidity is the condition characterized by burning sensation in the stomach or chest, belching, water brash, nausea, headache etc and is seen in many diseases like gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer etc.

Normally, food is digested with the secretion of acid in stomach. In this case, digestion of food takes longer time which leads to more acid secretion giving rise to above mentioned symptoms and is known as ‘dyspepsia’. Therefore dietary measures should be aimed at improving digestion thereby reducing dyspepsia.

Diet:-

A) To be taken:

1) Solid food:
a) Grains and Cereals: - Use of barley, green gram, wheat and rice is advisable. Grains and cereals should not be newly harvested but should be at least 1 year old before use.
b) Vegetables: - Bitter gourd, serpent gourd, lady’s finger, gourd, cucumber, plantain flower etc are advisable for such condition.
c) Fruits: - Pomegranate, hog plum, grapes, coconut, ripe banana etc should be consumed.

2) Liquids:
a) Boiled water after cooling to normal temperature should be used.
b) Hot milk with added sugar is beneficial.
c) Honey with warm water or milk is beneficial.
d) Soups of above mentioned vegetables and juices of above mentioned fruits with added sugar are advisable.

Notes:
1. Food should be light and should digest easily. Light food should be taken 3-4 times instead of having heavy food twice.
2. Food products having tastes sweet, bitter and astringent should be used more often.
3. Use of clarified butter (ghee) in food is advisable to reduce acidity depending upon the strength of the digestive fire.
4. Use of spices like ginger, green coriander, coriander seeds should only be use in food to increase the strength of digestive fire.
5. Sweet syrup preparation of rose petals or hog plum is useful to relieve burning sensation.

B) Not to be taken:
1) Solid food:
a) Grains and Cereals: - Black gram, horse gram, sesame should be avoided. Use of newly grown up rice etc should be avoided. Use of sago is also not beneficial.
b) Vegetables: - Potato, sweet potato, tomato, garlic, brinjal, green peas, radish etc should be avoided. Use of chilly should be bare minimum.
c) Fruits: - Tamarind, lemon, pear, strawberry, guava, orange etc are contraindicated.
d) Non-vegetarian food: - Use of non-vegetarian food should be avoided as that is very heavy to digest as well as that type of food produces more amount of hard stool which becomes problematic for the piles. Especially fishes should be avoided because of the troublesome nature with respect to piles.
e) Dairy products: - Only curd or yoghurt should be strictly avoided. Sour buttermilk should also be avoided.
f) Bakery products: - Cakes, breads, biscuits etc are not good for digestion, hence should not be eaten.
g) Fermented products: - fermented products where there is a use of yeast increase acid secretion so should be avoided.

2) Liquids:
a) Extreme hot or cold water should be avoided. Water intake should be bare minimum and as per the requirement and should not be excessive. Drinking hot and cold liquids immediately one after another should strictly be avoided.
b) Use of broth, being sour should be avoided.
c) Soup of horse gram should be strictly avoided.
d) Newly made liquor and wine should be avoided.
e) As a combination of milk and fruit is considered as of like a poison, milkshakes of various fruits should strictly be avoided.
f) Chilled drinks should not be consumed.

Notes:
1. Food items heavy to digest such as pizza, burger, and sandwich should be avoided as they can cause indigestion and can lead to worsening of the piles.
2. Salty and oily food is not beneficial. Avoid deep fried food.
3. Avoid spice burst in boiling oil while cooking food.
4. More spicy food, non-vegetarian food etc should be avoided.
5. Use of jaggary and sugar should be bare minimum.
6. Use of sour food products like sauce, jam, pickles, spicy chutneys etc should be avoided.
7. Food items like fruit-salad should be avoided.
8. Frozen food, microwave cooked food, over night food, re-cooked food should be avoided.
9. Irregular food habits, late night dinner etc should be avoided in such condition.

Non-dietary measures:
a) Use of purification measures like emesis, purgation therapy help in lowering excess acid and also improves digestion process.
b) Avoid sleeping in afternoons as well as sleeping immediately after the meals.
c) Use of tobacco, cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco etc should be strictly avoided.
d) Regular exercise, walking etc will help to improve digestive fire strength and results have good effect on improvement of the process of digestion.
