Follow these simple steps to add terms to TermWiki, and also invite your friends and peers to discuss them in topic-based interest groups. Each contribution you make will add to the overall points you collect with the system, to qualify you for various promotions.
Adding Terms Manually
On the homepage of TermWiki.com, click the large Add a new term button on the left-hand navigation sidebar, and enter the name of the term you would like to add. TermWiki has a couple of easy-to-follow requirements for new terms, and the site will prompt you for them as you input new content.
After entering the name of the term, you will be asked to specify the domain and category under which it should be classified. These category tags enable other community members to access the terms most relevant to their search queries, both in English and foreign languages, as terms often have different meanings in different contexts.
After entering this information, click Add or edit term at the bottom right-hand side of the page. This will lead you to the next page, where you will be prompted to enter more detailed information about the term:
•the definition, which should be at least one sentence long
•any relevant synonyms
•images or sound files the further illustrate the term
•(if applicable) any product or company to which the term applies
If you yourself are a business owner or representative of a company and would like to link your company or product to a given term, you will have to be the first person to add it to the site. After you have entered all pertinent information, click Save, and the term will be directly added to TermWiki.
Uploading Terms in Bulk
For users who would like to add many terms at the same time, the most efficient way is to import them with an Excel spreadsheet. You can download an Excel template from the Import terms from Excel page, which is accessible via TermWiki’s Dashboard. This template contains all the same fields as the new term form described above.
Fill out the form as fully and accurately as possible, with one row dedicated to each term. In addition to a clear and concise definition, it’s important to indicate the part of speech, industry/domain, and relevant category for each term. Once you have filled all the necessary fields in the spreadsheet, you can import your terms by uploading the Excel file on the Import terms from Excel page. Just click on Choose File, find the spreadsheet on your local hard drive, click Open, and then Import. The imported file will need to be reviewed before your terms are automatically uploaded to TermWiki.
Translating Terms in 75+ Languages
Multilingual community members can further boost TermWiki’s group learning environment by translating terms and their definitions for the benefit of other language learners on the site. There are two ways to perform translation on the site:
1)On the bottom of each term page, there is a beige language bar with links to languages other than English. Blue-colored links indicate that the term has already been translated into that language. Red links indicate that the term has not yet been translated. By clicking on red language links at the bottom of a term page, you will be prompted to enter a translation of the term and its definition into that language.
2)You can also translate terms in group batches by using the TermWiki Workbench, which is also accessible by clicking Translate Terms on the left-hand sidebar of the homepage. When using the workbench, you must first enter your target language, and then indicate your domain of interest or specialization. This allows you to focus on translating terms within your own field of expertise. Alternatively, you can opt to translate a random selection of terms from the site’s entire glossary by choosing Select all industries.
In the workbench, you will be shown the term and its definition in English, and will be prompted to enter the translated term and definition directly to the right of each entry. Once you have translated all the terms and definitions, click Save and your translations will be automatically added to the system.
Creating and Sharing Personal Glossaries
TermWiki supports the creation and maintenance of personal glossaries directly on the site. If you like, you also have the option of sharing your glossaries with friends or colleagues, who can help you to collaboratively review, grow and improve them. To keep your terms within a personal glossary, click My Glossary on the left-hand sidebar of TermWiki’s homepage. You will need to first create a glossary, then add or import terms through the My Glossary portal. A detailed walkthrough is available to help you with this process. After your glossary is complete, you and your colleagues or friends whom you invited to collaborate on the glossary are able to export it for outside use.
Marketing Yourself and Gaining Online Exposure
Each term you add to TermWiki.com is stamped with a conspicuous contributor box, which includes brief details about yourself and a link to your user page. In order to benefit from the thousands of people browsing your terms every month, your individual user page is an effective way of promoting yourself, your expertise, and your services.
