If you and your family have been adversely affected by the economic slowdown, please accept my sympathies. Remember that your situation will improve. The economy will turn around and people will start to earn more money. The best way to cope with this situation is to look past it to the future.
For a lot of people, cutting expenses will entail moving into a smaller home or even to an apartment. Less living space, however, also means less storage space. Begin the process of downsizing by having a yard sale. We all have those “someday I’ll be thin” clothes in the back of our closets, or those kitchen appliances that never do anything but take up space.
When downsizing it's important to really think about what you want to keep and what you’re willing to give up. Do not eliminate things you may regret in the future or items that would ultimately need replacement. It’s a good idea to hang on to items of great sentimental value; no amount of money could ever replace what they mean to you. Instead put those possessions into temporary storage along with everything else you decide to keep.
There are many ways to store your valuable items for a later time. A climate controlled storage facility is a good option. This storage unit will protect your property from harsh weather. A friend of mine found this to be the perfect solution for her craft items and rubber stamps, which were worth thousands of dollars. A typical self storage unit would have gotten too hot and ruin the stamps. This type of unit is also more likely to attract dust and rodents. The climate controlled storage unit held a steady moderate temperature throughout the year. This unit kept everything in pristine condition for when she could utilize them again.
Be careful when packing belongings for storage. It is impossible to know how long they may need to be boxed up. A fantastic opportunity could open up in another state and your things would have to be moved before you ever got a chance to look at them again. If you pack correctly then your items will survive the move. Keep in mind the current state of the economy is only temporary; your treasures will be back at home to enjoy before you know it.
