Practitioners of old style wet shaving with double edge safety razors or even straight razors swear that there is no closer shave, and no shave more satisfying. Whether you want to try real blade shaving for style reason or for a super-close, smooth shave and a way to make a little luxury time for yourself out of your daily routine; the old-fashioned kind of wet shaving can be mastered - even if your Dad or grandpa never taught you.
We live in interesting times with ever-changing technologies. Many cling to older technologies like vinyl records, printed books and the like - sometimes for nostalgic reasons and sometimes because the technology is just better even if it is not convenient. Men's shaving is one thing that has changed greatly with five bladed vibrating disposable razors and high-tech hair removal. With plastic disposable razors emerging as the norm for most men, the lost art and close shave of a safety razor has almost been lost.

1 - Preparation. Shaving with a softened and moistened face is best for the skin. This can be accomplished by shaving right after a hot shower, or by holding a wet towel over your face for a minute or two. The key is using the hottest water you can stand without hurting yourself. A good facial cleanser or exfoliant helps.

2 - Lather. Keep it old-school with shaving soap rather than canned creams or gels. Take a small amount of shave soap in a bowl or mug and work it with a shaving brush. Use the brush to lather your entire beard evenly with a thick layer of lather.

3 - Start with the blade of the razor at a 30 to 45-degree angle to your face.

4 - Shave with the grain of the hair shaft, angling the safety razor as far away from you as you can while still getting a shave.

5 - Go back over the areas of your beard with the razor after you re-lather your face. Unlike a disposable blade, the safety razor is meant for beard reduction, not a clean shave in one pass. Going over your face with multiple passes will gradually allow for a closer shave.

6 - Rinse your face with cold water once you have finished shaving. Cold water helps close up your pores and also helps prevent razor burn and bumps. Dab your clean face with aftershave.
