Once upon a time there was a greedy man in a town. The man was very rich, but at the same time a miser. The man liked everything to be his own. One day he lost thirty gold coins while returning from the market. He went to his friend Jaidev’s house and told him about the gold coins. In the same evening, Jaidev’s daughter got thirty gold coins on the street while returning back from the errand. She gave the coins to her father. The honest Jaidev called the greedy man and gave the coins to him. After counting the coins, the greedy man told Jaidev that there were forty coins, and not thirty.

He further added that the girl must have taken the ten coins and asked the ten old coins back. In greed of getting some more coins, the greedy man went to the court and informed the judge there about what had taken place between him and the girl’s father. The judge asked the girl how many coins she got, and she replied thirty. The judge then told the man that the gold coins did not belong to him because the girl found thirty and not forty as he claimed to have lost and then told the girl to take the gold coins. It was then that the man confessed that he lied and that he lost thirty gold coins but the judge did not listen to him. It was the greed and a small lie of the person that made him lose his coins again. We human beings are different from the animals because we have the characteristics of rationality.

We can think and react according to that; we can distinguish between what is good and what is bad. Basically we human beings develop through progressive stages of moral development. In our childhood days we learn about how to lead a morally upgraded life. But it is often noticed among kids that they become involved in lying. Though in the childhood, we generally don’t bother about our kids’ lies, but in many cases lying often turns into a habit among kids. Thus it is very important to stop this habit in an early stage. Parents can help their kids to overcome this habit. There are some tips that parents can follow to teach kids about lying and its consequences. These are briefly discussed below:-

• Tell your child that cheating or lying is wrong. Being parents we should be clear about our own moral beliefs and should pass it on to our kids
• You should let your child feel that how much you appreciate their honesty and truthfulness
• Discuss to your child about the negative consequences of cheating and lying. This can be done through telling them moral stories
• Parenting is a task that requires a lot of patience. We should always keep on monitoring the behavior of our kids, so that any negative characteristic can be stopped
• Teach ways to buck the pressure to cheat. Always keep an eye on the people with whom your child is getting involved.

Your child will soon get the message that you respect laws, rules and regulations and that you expect the same from your children.
