If you’re concerned about how to pay for veterinary school you should know that there are many options. The cost of any higher education institution is always an important factor for students and their parents, but it should never be a complete deterrent from going after your dreams altogether. There are many different tricks and tips to help you pay for veterinary school, so you can achieve the career goals you have in mind.
Consider Your Career Options: If you want to go into the veterinary field you have more than one option. You can go straight to a four-year university and work towards a bachelor’s degree followed by a graduate degree to become a veterinary doctor, or you can complete a program at a community college and begin working as a veterinary assistant. Some of the coursework may count towards a veterinary medicine degree, and while you’re working you can keep taking classes towards your ultimate goal.
Federal Student Loans: While you don’t want to take out more loans than you need, it is perfectly acceptable to take some help from the federal government that you don’t need to pay back until after graduation. Federal student loans have low interest rates and can be paid back in small installments over time, and many of them don’t accrue interest until after you graduate. You can also suspend payments if you go back to school or if you are having financial difficulties.
Look for Scholarships: There are all sorts of scholarships from foundations, corporations, smaller businesses and individuals. There are plenty of people and organizations who are interested in using their capital to further the veterinary field through scholarships; if you take the time to do some research you’re likely to find some money out there.
Work Your Way to Graduation: Of course it’s harder to finish school while working, but definitely not impossible. Many people have done it. If you can find work at a veterinary office or other place of employment within the veterinary industry it will also provide great experience for your résumé and perhaps give you the opportunity to network for your future career.
