As an upcoming guitar player, you will definitely come across several challenges. What is important is that you get to know how you would easily overcome the challenges so that nothing comes in between your goal. In the next section, we will highlight one major challenger that upcoming guitarists have to face and how they can handle it.
But first, what is this challenge? The challenge is playing barre chords. What you need to realize is that you are not alone if you find them difficult to go about. They challenge people who have small hands most. As such, some guitarists completely avoid them but you must not do that. Barre chords can be played if you have a plan and you work with your plan all the way.
There are three ways you would successfully overcome the challenge of barre chords in your guitar lessons.
1) Have a friendly guitar. Barre chords would be easier to play if you have a guitar whose strings are low enough for you to play. So, your starting point would be to check the action of the guitar and lower it so that you have chords that you can easily play.
2) The second way is to use capo. What capo does is that it reduces the action of the guitar so that you don’t have to use so much pressure on the strings. Capo should be placed on the second fret.
3) The third way is to start low and advance progressively. This means you would start at half barre or partial, and then move to full barre chord later.
Illustration
• To play half barre, you would have your first finger on the first three strings of the first fret and strum the 3 strings.
• To play partial barre, you would put your first finger across all the six strings of the first fret and strum all of strings.
• To play full barre, you will have your first finger on all the 6 strings of the first fret, and your third finger on the fifth string of the third fret and fourth finger on the fourth string in third fret and strum all of strings.
Important note
You need to constantly exercise barre chords to master them. You can repeat the strumming for the different frets up to the fifth fret for the half barre. You only need some 5 to 10 minutes each day on barree chord practice to perfect it. Soon, you will find it easy to go about.
