It is believed that a classroom is like a play ground for the mind where. In a fruitful education system, the classroom environment plays a vital role. Every student should get equal chance to participate in the classroom activities. It is nicely quoted by a scholar that a classroom is “four walls with future inside”. Many people develop a tendency that students from the same caste or community can share a common culture inside the classroom; this can help the students to unity into one thread of brotherhood. But in many cases it is observed that in such classrooms, students often get divided rather than united. Moreover, such students also fail to communicate well in their future life when they are exposed to diverse cultures and people.
Many a time it is noticed that when a child with special needs entered into a general education classroom. In a country like India where languages and cultures get changed after every 10 kilometer, it is very important to infuse a sense of brotherhood among the children so that no external power can divide them. The purpose of education is not only to teach how to read and write, but to prepare a generation of youth who are strong physically, mentally and by character.
Inclusive classroom environment creates such a platform for both the students and the teachers where everyone contributes equally to make the process of learning successful. There are some principles that help in creating a sound classroom environment. Some of them are briefly discussed below:-
1. The first important thing is to teach students to show respect to everyone’s feelings, cultures and beliefs. But to do that, the teacher first needs to set the example before the students. Always remember not to hurt the students’ ego.
2. If a child with special need takes an admission into a general school, the teacher need to explain the students that special education is also normal and those students who have a special learning need actually require this kind of education.
3. Always give enough time to students to know each other. This will help them in discovering the commonalities among themselves. This can be done in multiple ways like assigning group projects, or initiating any group play or drama.
4. Try to make students aware of the rich history of our past where members from different community fought for one goal. This will positively encourage the students to be united.
5. Celebrate different festivals and ask all the parents to participate in that. this will make students aware of the culture of different people and at the same time will infuse a feeling of oneness among them.
6. Talk to students individually and as a group about what acceptance means. Tell them that in order for a classroom community to thrive all of its members need to be fully accepted and appreciated.
Classrooms with inclusive cultures explicitly and implicitly, consciously and unconsciously, and verbally and nonverbally, convey to all learners the positive message that everyone is welcome to the class to share the common goal of being educated. Make the necessary modifications to your classroom culture to ensure that each of your learners feels treasured and engaged.
