MOST photographers, regardless of whether they are professional or plain hobbyist, carry with them their cameras. But not all of them can actually have with them their tripod.

There are three top reasons why not all of them can’t seem to have with them their camera tripods. One is because it is expensive. Second, it is too inconvenient to be carried around. Third, it is not always being used.

Photography as Profession and Hobby

Photography has always been a very good hobby. In fact, the number of Americans into this hobby is growing each year. These people take photos at their own liking and taste. They go places in search of “something” that is worth the “flash” of the camera.

They are basically the amateur photographers, who take photography as a hobby. They’re not after earning anything from it. There are some amateurs though who are capable of producing photos at par with the shots of the pros. Thus, some of them ends up sustaining photography not just as a hobby but also gets to profit from the quality images that they produce.

There are however those who makes a living out of it. They are the professional photographers working in studios, art photographers (takes candid shots, prints and frame them for exhibit and sale), forensic photographers (who takes photos of crime scenes and crime-related objects, people), the photo journalists, advertising-based photographers (those taking photos for advertising and promotions purposes), events photographer (who covers an event and shoots for memorabilia) among many other photo-based jobs.

Some of them actually need tripods. Some don’t.

The Need for Tripod

A closer look at lower portion of the camera would show a small threaded hole. That hole is intended for tripods. Tripods are normally used by still photographers, which include those into advertising, design, fashion, food, glamour, still life, portrait, landscape and wildlife.

More often than not, one could find tripods in photography studios, where it is most needed.

Tripods are normally used for still photos, although there are some instances when a tripod is needed especially when the photographer would not want his camera to move while taking a shot of a moving object. It is also advisable to use tripods when using telephoto lenses. Any unnecessary movement of the camera ruins the shot. Tripod use largely contributes to sharp photo images.

Tripod also guarantees accuracy of the subject, especially when images are for framing.

Improvising Tripods

As not all photographers carry tripods with them, it is best that they know how to make one, especially when they needed it most.

How do we make one? What you need is a plastic bottle (it could be an empty mineral water or soda bottle), ¼” nut, bolt, two washers and a wing nut.

Fill half of the bottle with water. Put a hole on its plastic cup. The hole should be barely enough to allow the ¼” nut to get through. Place a flat washer under the cap then put the nut. Once the nut is in, put the bolt in place. Screw the wing nut and put another flat washer on top. Seal the half-filled bottle again using the cap with the nut and bolt. Then attach the camera.

You now have an instant tripod in a flash.
