While it’s true that an exercise in improving your memory is all about an exercise to improve the ability of the mind in recording facts, this seemingly simple task is often difficult to put to practice. Poor memory is all about poor recollection. There are three stages that your brain goes through when forming and preserving memories.
New information enters the brain through pathways between neurons and the key here is to concentrate on the information attentively. The next stage is to consolidate the memory. Once you’ve concentrated on the information the brain sends a signal that help to store information as long term memory. The third and final stage is retrieval. This happens when the brain activates the nerve cells that stored the information.
There are several memory improvement techniques that help people remember things. The first and foremost thing to do is to pay attention. Unless you pay attention on the subject, you won’t be able to remember it. It’s believed that the brain takes about 8 seconds to register and process new information. Hence make sure you receive information without getting distracted.
When you wish to recollect data, try and connect it to information that you already know. For example, when trying to memorize an address, try and connect it to someone you know who already stays there.
While there are some who can remember things when they see them visually, there are some who can understand well when they hear information. Choose a way that you are comfortable.
When trying to understand and memorize complex things, first try and understand its basic features and then try and connect the details to these basic facts.
When trying to memorize numbers, try and divide them into small groups. This is popularly called chunking and is probably the oldest method used by people. When trying to remember words or names, you could also try and rhyme it.
You brain is more like your muscles, if you don’t use it, you risk losing it. There are several brain exercises that help in memory improvement. Try and break routines to help the brain use pathways that were never used before. For example writing or brushing with your non dominant hand helps a lot to improve memory power.
Have you tried to shower with your eyes closed? Exercises like these help to force your brain to think unusually. Try and learn new skills. You could either learn to cook, or learn a new language or even learn a new game. These exercises help to stimulate your brain in the most unusual way and contribute to memory improvement.
