Algae are part of the water environment, so it’s really impossible to completely remove them in ponds and lakes. However, algae can be reduced or prevented through simple methods. The easy steps to preventing algae are the key to a clean and healthy pond!

Whether you admit it or not, algae are a part of any water feature there is. If you plan to put up a pond garden for example, be prepared to carry some responsibilities like maintaining the cleanliness of the pond. Since it is a water system, algae will immediately flourish in the pond especially if not cleaned properly. There are however a few ways to deal with these plant-like organisms.
It is such a fulfilling sight when you see your pond water as clear as a crystal after you have cleaned it. But after a few days or so, you will find that algae start to prosper and slowly take over your pond again. You might think that it is such a waste of time to actually tidy up the pond every time there are algae visible. That is why a few ways have been introduced to garden pond owners on how to fight algae from conquering the whole water feature.
When you are planning to install a garden pond, try to do it in the spring since this season has the most stable weather. And before you put the fish, plants and ornamental rocks in the water, be sure to add water conditioner to it. This will condition the water and remove any chloramine content it has. In most cases, tap water may contain chloramine which is harmful to the living creatures in your pond except for algae. As a matter of fact, it can be a good source of food for them.
Another additive you can use to prevent algae from overtaking the pond is to dye the water blue. This liquid is available in the market and can be added to the pond water once a month. Not only it gives more beauty to the water but also prevents algae from growing. The color of the water reflects the sunlight the hit the pond. That way, the light does not go in the water thus less energy source for the algae.
To accentuate the pond more, you can add a few aquatic ornamental plants like water hyacinths and water lettuce. These types of plants not only add up to the aesthetic pleasure you get from your pond. They also block the sunlight from penetrating into the water and reaching the algae that depend on sunlight. Other plants can also help in beating the algae fever in the pond. The more plants you have, the fewer nutrients will be available for the algae.
There are also pond filters in the market that can be used to keep the pond free from at least 80% of the algae you have in your water feature. And for the filter to be more effective, you can actually do something like adding up carbon to the filtration system of the pond. This helps remove the excess nutrients that feed the algae.
Aside from the ways mentioned above, there are other alternatives you can do to get rid of the algae that co-exist in your pond. As much as you want them to be totally eliminated, they can’t be. They are a part of the ecosystem they exist in and they also play an important part in it.
