Raising your children alone, can be a discouraging task. Married couples, at times, may find themselves in the role of a single parent if the other parent is away from the home for an extended period of time due to military duty or imprisonment. A single parent family is one where there is only one parent and one or more children living together. In such cases, one parent has to serve a dual-parent role, that of both mother and father to a child.

This leads to a slight distortion in the upbringing and development of a child when compared to children growing up with both parents. Though children with single parents grow up with a biased gender role, such that when they choose partners later on in life, the men they choose are slightly effeminate or the women they choose are slightly masculine in their approach towards life and in making decisions. On the brighter side of their development, Children in single parent households usually learn responsibility from necessity earlier than children from two-parent households. While single parenting is not a choice many people would intentionally make, it can have its rewards. Many times single parents discover they are capable of doing more than they ever thought possible and that they have skills they did not know they had.

They become more self-reliant and less co-dependent upon others for their existence. And hopefully they learn that true happiness must come from within, not from other people. Likewise children that accept their parent as role models learn by example and likewise carry that same trait of independence into their everyday work and relationships. Single parenting is very challenging, but it can also reap benefits if you accept the challenge and grow through it. One of the most significant challenges facing single parents would have to be trying to make ends meet financially. Paying for the house and the child’s education apart from the everyday expense of grocery and tuition or hobby class can be difficult. In such cases the children also tend to become a little more mature and responsible financially.

Teach them about living in peace with themselves and others. Teach them how to value life and enjoy it. In short, teach them to count their blessings and not look at the bad situations they cannot change. Help them find ways to learn and grow from the experience. There can be many good side effects from single parenting. It does not all have to be negative. Focus on the positive things you can do and teach your children. Teach them how to make lemonade when life gives you lemons. And do not forget, children, so be a good role model for them to follow by setting a good example. Instilling in your children a positive outlook on life in spite of the misfortunes will help chart their success for the future.

However, all challenges can provide opportunities for learning and growing. View them as challenges to be overcome, not obstacles of defeat. You will be a much stronger person. Children in single-parent homes can learn to help with household chores and care for younger siblings, which helps them develop maturity quicker. Children become self-reliant, can solve problems, and accept responsibility for their actions when you as a single parent spare time with them and share your feelings. It helps them learn that life is not fair and to make the best of the situation.
