So you’re an artist (solo or in a band) who’s thinking about making your first CD? You must be excited, although most people will feel a little bit intimidated as you’re going to brave this alone without the backing of a major label. For independent artists, this whole making a CD thing can be overwhelming, but it’s not enough reason to not make CDs for your fans. Learn the basics and go through the process with careful planning. Here are some simple guidelines for starters:
1. List down the possible songs. Include your best numbers, the ones that the crowd loves and is able to be played really well by your band. Don’t self-indulge and play only your own favorites because that might not be good for your fans.
2. Do a reality check on your budget. How much are you willing to spend on this project? This is a very important question to answer, as the cost of making a CD can vary greatly depending on how much can be done. Your main objective should stay at producing high-quality product that people will want to spend their money on. Do thorough researches on studio time cost, CD cover artwork design, additional musicians and CD printing, because these will affect your entire initial capital. Don’t have enough money to spend? Think of ways to raise funds, and be creative!
3. Narrow down your song choices and keep your best numbers at the top of your short list. Decide how long your project will be, depending on your budget. Sometimes it will be more effective to spend money per song and create higher quality EP, rather than jamming all songs into a CD with moderate quality. Be wise in determining this part.
4. Record your songs! Before you get into the studio and run on the pricey studio time, make sure you rehearsed your songs perfectly. Aim for fewer takes but don’t rush into anything. Point is: take your time, but not too much because the meter’s running!
5. Print your CDs, do the proper artwork and don’t forget to include credits in your CD. Create a master CD and duplicate them according to your budget.
Don’t be afraid in trying and getting the best deals everywhere. You’re lucky if you have friends as resources, and ask for their help, or pay them within reasonable prices. Try making your own CD independently and it will pay off in the end.
