How to Choose the Best Printer for Your Office Needs

If you are a typical home computer user, you may find that an inexpensive inkjet printer is exactly what you need. If you print a lot of work, however, especially if you are running a business out of your home office, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that a laser printer saves you time and money.
The time has come- you need a new printer for your office. So how do you decide on the best machine for the job? Is it all about price? Ongoing cost of use? Quality? Speed? Every one of these details is important, so how do you begin to narrow down the choices? Choosing a printer doesn't have to be difficult, as long as you know what you need and how to find it.

Price is often the first thing on the table when making any purchase. After all, there are only so many dollars in the budget. Before you go out and purchase the current $30 model at the big-box store, however, take a minute to consider the actual cost of your printer. There is more to the picture than sticker price. Do you want a disposable printer that will last for a year or two and cost you $20 a pop for an ink cartridge? If you don't have a high volume of output, this option could be just fine for you. Many home computer users (and even solopreneurs) use an inexpensive inkjet printer and get perfectly acceptable performance at a price they can easily live with. If that's you- you've got it made. Head down to the nearest department store or electronics outfit and pick one off the shelf. You can choose a popular big brand name printer that will get the job done without worry.

If you print a large volume of work, however, you may want to dig a little deeper before you pull out the credit card. A laser printer may cost a bit more up front, but you will save money over time by using toner rather than inkjet cartridges. Laser printers will also typically last longer than bargain inkjet printers and they have replaceable parts, extending their life even longer.

When it comes to quality, again, you need to consider your work load. If you print a lot of photos, an inkjet printer will give you precise results that few, if any, laser printers can match. If your game is text, laser printers score. Laser printers knock out huge volumes of text, graphs, charts and the like at astronomical speeds, high-quality and low cost. Laser printers win hands down over inkjet printers when it comes to speed, producing 20 or even close to 30 pages per minute versus a low-to- mid priced inkjet's average of 10 or so at normal printing speed.
