If you need to wipe anything off inside your printer, a damp cloth is the best choice. Make sure it is clean before you use it and that anything wiped off is completely dry before using the printer again.
As with any piece of electronic equipment, certain things should be done to get the most out of your inkjet printer. Regular maintenance and cleaning is something that may seem to be a given, but, sadly, it is rarely done. Printers do not require a lot in the way of maintenance or cleaning if you take a few simple steps to ensure you get the longest life from your inkjet printer.

Dust is one of the worst enemies any piece of electronic hardware can have. Dust tends to get into everything. If dust builds up on the print heads and rollers, it can cause poor printing and paper jams.
Using a simple cover over the printer when it is not in use can prevent dust from building up these important, sensitive pieces.

Turning your inkjet printer on and off can't be a bad thing, right? It can be if you turn the unit off using a power strip and not the on/off button on the printer. When the printer is turned off, it sets the printing head into a very specific position before completely powering down to protect the printer head when the unit is not in use. Using a power strip to turn the power on and off does not allow the printer to reset the head into the correct position. Over time, this may, damage the printer. If you use the printer on a daily basis, just leave it on - printers normally go into stand-by mode using minimal energy.

It is possible that, over time, the print head can become clogged and printouts may have odd lines on them or may be missing areas in the printout. Sometimes this is because of low ink levels but, if there is plenty of ink, you would want to run the maintenance tasks in the printer's control window. These will attempt to unclog the head and make sure it is properly aligned. Running a print head cleaning can use a decent bit of ink so, if your ink levels are low, you won't be able to run the task until you replace the ink.

If your printing is out of sync, for example, if the colors are not printing correctly you may need to re-align the heads. Color ink is a combination of the three primary colors being printed out in specific amounts to create any color you want. When they are misaligned, some colors may print more than others turning blue into purple and so on. Normally there is a re-align feature in your printer's control sections that will handle this for you. Following these simple tips will extend the life of your inkjet printer and make sure that each print job is as perfect as the first test page you ever printed.
