Wondering how to become a nutritionist? If you are caring, hard working and passionate about nutrition, this could be the career for you. People in the United States and around the world are becoming more and more concerned with their health, especially since obesity has become such a major problem in the Western world. People need professional support to become as healthy as possible, and a nutritionist is an important part of that. If you become a nutritionist you will be responsible for developing dietary guidelines and menus for clients or patients, whether you work for a hospital, clinic, school, nonprofit organization, health spa, fitness center or in your own private practice.
The first step to becoming a nutritionist is to connect with people in this field to learn what their job entails, what is expected of them and what their recommendation are. This way you can decide whether this career might be right for you. If you think it’s a good choice, then you’ll want to start learning as much as possible about diet, food and meal preparation. You’ll also want to start incorporating different healthy foods into your diet and asking what other people like so you will have many different ideas when you start writing meal plans for people.
You’ll need to complete an educational program that’s been accredited by the American Dietetic Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. Bachelor’s degree programs will include courses in biology, food science, nutrition and physiology. Important supplementary courses for this career include business, computer science, psychology and math courses such as statistics. A master’s degree may also be necessary if you want to go into the management side of things or enter a more specialized subset of the career such as cardiovascular, diabetic or pediatric nutrition.
Some states require certification to become a nutritionist, which involves an internship and the passage of an exam. After getting your license, if your state requires it, then you can begin looking for work. The pay for nutritionists ranges from $30,000 to $45,000 depending on experience, location, specialization and level of education, but there is room for advancement and many rewards that come with this career.
