So you want to learn how to become a CAD drafter. First it’s a good idea to learn more about this exciting field. The CAD drafting and design technology field has boomed since its inception only three decades ago. Architecture, engineering, manufacturing and many other industries rely on this technology for their drafting and design needs, and it is considered the industry standard by many. As computer technology has advanced, so has CAD drafting, and there is no end in sight to the growth of possibilities. The fastest way to get into the field of CAD design and drafting is to become an architectural CAD technician.
If you are going to become a CAD architectural technician, you will need to have advanced computer technology skills and a knack for organization and self-discipline. Your job will be to produce 3-dimensional plans and/or detailed drafts for various architectural projects. CAD, or computer aided drafting, is a means of creating blueprints and layouts, which requires long hours of work often on your own. The first steps you can take to enter this field are to strengthen your skills in English, math and science, as these are essential to the work of a CAD technician or drafter. And, of course, focus on your computer technology skills.
Most employers want to see a degree to prove that you are proficient in AutoCAD and various architectural desktop programs. A two-year associate’s degree in CAD and drafting will provide the education and training to enter this field. Make sure the program you choose is accredited and offers good curriculum that has helped former students enter this challenging field.
Completing an internship while in school or shortly after graduating will provide great experience, and you may even be able to get hired by the company you intern for. Once you’re done with school and working in the field all the hard work will pay off. CAD technicians may only start off making $30,000 to $40,000 per year, but you can make upwards of $60,000 after 20 years in the field. With advancements and additional schooling you can earn much more.
