Hemorrhoids are small muscular pads that are found in the anal canal. They extend both outwards outside the anus and inwards inside the anus. The skin or epidermis covering the anal canal is very thin and the veins are right next to the surface. Thus any irritation or agitation can lead to inflammation of the area or formation of cuts or abscesses and this leads to hemorrhoids or piles.

Why Do They Happen

The causes of hemorrhoids are anything that irritate or inflame that area. This could occur during constipation when people tend to exert or force the anal muscles. Sweating or fungal infection due to improper hygiene that makes people itch and scratch themselves leading to the area becoming tender is also a cause.

Other causes of hemorrhoids are anything amongst long periods of sitting, weakness in the muscular tissues, anal sex or it could even be hereditary.

What Are the Symptoms?

Depending on which area of the canal the inflammation has taken place, the hemorrhoid symptoms can vary. If the inflammation is in the internal area, the only symptom is that of blood covered stool. The internal anal canal lacks sensory nerves of feeling and hence there is no pain unless the condition is much deteriorated.

If the external area of the anal canal is affected, the initial hemorrhoid symptoms include itching and/or pain. There is also marked discomfort in the anal region while passing stool or sitting.

The Treatment

This particular affliction is so common that one can find enormous amounts of information as to how to go about hemorrhoid treatment. If it is in the early stages and symptoms have just started one can easily use various home remedies for treatment.

The treatment first is to modify the diet in case of constipation. One should increase the fiber in one’s diet so that the constipation eases and the stool passed remains of a soft consistency and does not further inflame the region. In any case, do not force or exert yourself while passing stool as this will further exacerbate the condition.

To ease the pain or itching in the area one can apply aloe vera gel directly on the anal region. Other means of hemorrhoid treatment involve dipping oneself hip deep in warm water. This is known as a Sitz bath and can provide succor to the tense and damaged tissues in that area.

Also remember to keep that area dry as wetness can lead to infection. But use soft tissues and material and tap dry instead of rubbing that area. In case, there is no improvement after many days and symptoms worsen, one should consult a doctor.
