Avoid Being Bitten

Always be aware of strange dogs that might be around you and always be sure to treat your dog with respect. Parents are the role model, so practice safe and good habits with your pets in front of both your children and other children. As a parent or caregiver be sure you:

- You don’t leave your child or infant alone with a dog.

- Always stay alert and cautious for possibly dangerous situations or dogs.

- Toddlers and children should always be taught to be careful around pets.

- Teach kids NOT to approach any dog without asking for permission from the dog’s owner before petting a dog.

Other Ways to Prevent a Dog Attack

- Avoid running past a dog. It’s in a dog’s nature to chase after things so don’t give them a reason to get excited or aggressive.

- Do not interrupt a dog that is tending to puppies, sleeping or eating.

- Dogs are protective of their territory so don’t reach through or over a fence to pet a dog.

- Avoid any sudden movements if a dog approaches to smell you. Sudden moments can cause the dog to react in a defensive manner, which may result in a bite or attack.

- Do your best to remain calm if a dog begins to threaten you. Stay calm, speak firmly, avoid eye contact and try your best to stay still until the dog leaves. You can also try to back away slowly until the dog is out of sight, but whatever you do, do not turn and run.

- Protect your face and neck with your arms and hands if you happen to fall to the ground and a dog is attacking you.
