We know that new technology keeps coming up every day. Solar energy is one source of energy which has been used since life started. But we all want to know that how does these fancy things like solar panels or photovoltaic panels work. Basic electrical circuit works in these panels and convert one form of energy to any other form.
The material used in solar panels is a semiconductor, which is generally crystalline silicon. This is used in many forms, eg. thin layer silicon, ribbon form, sheet form, monocrystalline and polycrystalline. These semiconductors absorb the light and the free electron already present in the metal gains energy and start moving within the material. Impurities are added in these semiconductors in order to carry the charge to the desired direction. The process of adding impurities to the semiconductor is known as doping. Because of doping the electrons can flow in a certain direction. This flowing of the electrons in on direction is known as the current. Metal contacts which are placed on both the sides carry the current for external use. This is a basic process involved in a solar photovoltaic cell. In a solar power panel photovoltaic cells are used, these cells are made of silicon which is in its crystalline state. Crystalline state of silicon is formed because the metal has four electrons in the outer shell and hence doping makes the count of electrons complete in order to make the current flow. Doping here is necessary because pure crystalline silicon can be a bad conductor of electricity, and to make it a good conductor this process is necessary. The power is hence achieved by the current flow and the voltage produced in the cell. There is a chance of reverse reflection of the light photons from silicon because this metal can be very shiny and hence all of the light could not be absorbed in the metal to give us great end result of power production. Therefore, to reduce the loss of light photons an antireflective coating has to be applied to the metal. Hence a solar power solutions is provided by installing these devices.
