Walkie talkies or portable two way radio devices are an effective way of communication that is cheaper, faster and is of great use in fields like the military, police, air forces, mines, airports, railways, event management companies and even for small family trips and trekkers. While walkie talkies offer amazing value for money, the only constraint that has stopped a lot of people from choosing a walkie talkie radio over a mobile phone is its connectivity range.
Walkie talkies are two way communication devices or transceivers that connect two or more devices using a radio channel. They work on a half-duplex channel, allowing one transmitter and one or more receivers to connect at the same time.

There are few amazing advantages a walkie talkie poses when compared to a usual consumer used mobile phone.

1. After paying a nominal fee of around INR 900 rupees annually for a walkie talkie to the Department of Telecom, there is absolutely no airtime charges for using them for the whole year

2. Brands like Talk PRO comes in 16 channels which means that there can be different groups or a single receiver for each channel amongst which utmost privacy can be assured

3. Walkie talkies are the only mode of communication in places where there is no network tower/signal for mobile phones to function

4. Communication can be facilitated by just a push of a button which means that there is no need to call a person and wait for the call to get connected like in phones

However, in spite of all the above said advantages, walkie talkies pose one great problem. The distance covered. Unlike mobile phones which can connect one end of the world to another, walkie talkies work on radio channels and offer a connectivity of a few meters to a few kilometers to the maximum. Barriers like trees, buildings, walls etc. can reduce even this range drastically.

Radio over Internet Protocol (RoIP) is a technology that strives to beat this challenge of connectivity in walkie talkies. For people familiar with the concept of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), this is not much different.

While VoIP facilitates voice communications over internet, RoIP is a concept of transmitting and receiving radio signals through internet. This was developed mainly to span large geographical areas with hand held radios. By using LAN, WAN and the internet cloud, walkie talkies can now help connect long distances like two different buildings and even two different cities. This technology can also be used to connect hard-to-access areas like unreachable tunnels and basements.

RoIP can be connected between both private and public internet networks and can also work between two different radio devices or even between one radio device and other devices like telephones, skype phones and other modern day communication devices.

With the integration of RoIP, walkie talkies are seeing amazing potential for replacing modern day communication devices.

While top brands of walkie talkies already offering a lot of customer friendly features, large span connectivity will greatly increase the usage of wireless walkie talkies by a great instant. For example, Talk PRO walkie talkies, manufactured by Iconet Wireless already have a lot of in built features like a powerful battery, up to 48 hours talk time, high power torchlight, light weight, waterproof, dustproof and bullet proof body and a one year warranty on the radio.

Along with these features, when RoIP can greatly increase connectivity range, there is no doubt walkie talkies will change the way of communication and pose a great challenge to modern day mobile phones, offering much cheaper and easier way of connecting to one another.
