Warming up for exercise should be the first phase of your workout or exercise routine as it helps raise your body temperature so you are ready to exercise. Warm-up moves your muscles from their normal or resting state to their exercise state. Thus, you need to get warm before you begin your workout in earnest.

Once you have finished your workout, you then need to cool down. Do not try to copy most people by skipping this phase of your workout. Remember that both warmup cooldown helps you prevent injury. Cooling down allows your body to go back to the state it was in prior to your exercise routine.
There are people who like to use deeper stretches to cool themselves down. A fact that many people do not know is that the warmup cooldown parts of your routine will greatly improve your body’s flexibility.
The main purpose of the warm-up for exercise is to ensure that the body is prepared for the stimulus or conditioning phase of the exercise routine or session. It is a fact that you need to warm up before you run, hit a squash ball or attempt a bench press. The warm-up process prepares you both mentally and physically for the more challenging activities ahead. Generally, a vast majority of athletes from most sports raise their body temperature with about 5 to15 minutes of gentle cardiovascular exercises and then doing some stretching off.
By not performing warm-ups, you may miss-out on many important health advantages. The effects of warm-up exercises on the body are:
• Warm-up exercises burn extra calories. Within the time span of warm-up exercises, you can expect to burn up to about 100 calories. That means you get 100 calories burned that you would have missed-out on if you skipped the warm-up exercises before your workout.
• Warm-up exercises help you to prevent injuries. They make sure that your muscles get warm and pliable and this helps you avoid injury from strenuous exercise.
• Warm-up exercises get you in the right frame of mind for your workout. Your mind becomes prepared the same way your body does for your main activity.
Cooling down exercises are important for reducing risk of injuries. Cooling down exercises allow your body to gradually slow down the level of activity and assist your body to get back to your pre-workout state.
When you do cool down exercises you help you to:
• Get your breathing and heart rate to go back to normal.
• Helps prevent any dizziness or pain
• Helps avoid post-workout muscle soreness
