Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are fantastic climbers and can easily climb their way up sheets, wood, or many other surface. They're also good at hitching rides on clothes, bags, purses, bed linen, furniture, luggage, books, or whatever object that was introduced into an infested area, then transported out into a formerly un-infested area. They likewise may be spread by sharing your furniture, or picking up tables, recliner or anything at all from the side of the road and taking them home.
Then once in the house, they start to spread, and multiply quickly, due to the fact that they're nocturnal, tiny and hard to detect. One things above all that has allowed bed bugs to spread throughout the world at a remarkable pace is the lack of public awareness. Many people simply don’t believe that bed bugs really exist, thinking that they are just bed time stories. As a result people do not take into account the potential risk when picking up used furniture that may be infested with bed bugs.
Treating bed bugs with Diatomaceous earth, also known as diatomite, is a naturally forming, siliceous (silica) sedimentary rock from ancient shells and single celled salt water organisms, that is ground into a fine powder. The powder has a coarse feel, something like pumice powder, and is very porous. There are many uses for Diatomaceous earth besides that of an insecticide which include, filtration, absorbant for liquides, scrubbing agent, stabilizing component in dynamite, activator in blood clotting studies, and much more.
Diatomite can be used as an insecticide because of its unique properties. Diatomite powder has microscopic razor sharp edges that cut the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Diatomaceous Earth can be utilized to control bed bugs, cockroaches, flea beetles, sawfly, mites, aphids, thrips, earwigs, silverfish, and ants, ticks. It is also commonly used in gardens to defeat slugs and snails by sprinkling the powder over the soil.
Treating bed bugs: Diatomaceous earth is lightly spread all through areas in your home wherever bed bugs or other insects typically travel. These areas include along and under baseboards, around bed posts, around furniture legs, and anywhere that you may have seen or been bitten by bed bugs. You will also want to take apart you bed frame and dust all joints, the bed well, and any crack or crevice where bed bugs might hide, always focusing on areas near beds, sofas, or any areas where people congregate. Apply a thin coating over these areas and let it sit for a week. Diatomaceous earth is mostly made up of silica, therefore it does not break down and will keep working over time. Although it would be a good idea clean it up now and then and reapply the powder, just to remove any dead bugs and dust that has accumulated.
Suggestions: Since diatomaceous earth is such a fine powder it is easy for it to become air born and for that reason it can be easily inhaled by animals and humans alike. It is very important to purchase “food grade” Diatomaceous Earth for domestic use. This particular soil has been refined to ensure that it is clean and free of any foreign particles, making it safe of house hold use. When using D.E it is always smart to wear a dust mask so you do not breath the fine particles in when dusting infected areas.
When looking for Diatomaceous earth (DE) make sure that you are looking for Food grade and pure DE versions. You do not want the kind used in pool filters or anything similar because it has more unfiltered particulates that could become air born and breathed in by you and pets.
