The sliding compound miter saw could be a must-have item in your woodworking tools arsenal. A cut-above (pardon the pun) its smaller siblings the cut-off saw, chop saw and any miter saw without a slide, there are many reasons you might find you can't live any longer without a sliding miter saw.

The sliding compound miter saw could be a must-have item in your woodworking tools arsenal. A cut-above (pardon the pun) its smaller siblings the cut-off saw, chop saw and any miter saw without a slide, there are many reasons you might find you can't live any longer without a sliding miter saw.
The primary advantage of a sliding miter saw over a normal compound miter saw is that you can crosscut wider lumber in a single pass. Sure, any miter saw can make a chop-cut in a two-by-four. But what if you need to cut a two-by-eight? How about a two-by-ten or more? Without a sliding miter saw, you'll probably need to start a cut on one side, then flip the wood and hope you can meet somewhere in the middle, while saving your thumb (unless I'm the only one who does that)!
There is so much you need to look for when looking for a sliding miter saw. Which miter saw you ultimately choose will depend on what you plan to do with it. But there are a few critical factors that you should consider. Does the saw have soft start, yet gets up to speed quickly? If you're concerned about making precise cuts into high-priced hardwoods, fine adjustment controls with a digital readout will be a must. How about light controls? Another important thing to consider is bevel and miter adjustments. Any saw worth its sawdust needs to be able to adjust to over 45 degrees. Speaking of sawdust, how is dust collected within the saw? What percent of dust is collected in the bag?
As you can see, selecting a sliding miter saw isn't necessarily difficult, but there are definite things to consider before making a purchase like this, since it will probably be the very last miter saw you buy. Hopefully I've been a little helpful; if so I hope you will take a look at a saw that meets all of the above requirements.

Editors of Wood Magazine named the Milwaukee 6955-20 on of the top tools for 2009, saying the saw is “loaded with user-friendly features.” The table rotates extremely smoothly, and the fine angle adjustments and dust control are outstanding.
Fine Homebuilding praised the Milwaukee 6955-20 as the best in its class. Miter angles can be digitally set to the nearest tenth of a degree, and the twin lights for illuminating the work area are judged more useful than a laser guide. The dust control is excellent.
