In February 2005, three PayPal employees started the beta test version of a web site named YouTube. They designed the site to allow people share videos with the rest of the world. In November 2005, Sequoia Capital invested more than $3 million in the website, and a month later YouTube emerged as a fully fledged Online destination. It didn't require much time for the web site to become well-known, and in November 2006, Google search engine purchased YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars.

As the web site has grown, so has the scope of the videos on the site. In the early of YouTube, you might find videos showing interesting places, crazy stunts and humorous jokes. You can still find that sort of content now, but you will also see political discussions, music shows, video tutorials and unfiltered war videos. In 2007, YouTube even provided members with a way to communicate with potential United States presidential candidates. YouTube members submitted video questions, and CNN featured some of them in Democratic and Republican debates.

YouTube has also become the center of several controversies. One of the most publicized controversies involves copyright violation. YouTube does not check video clips before they appear on the website -- people upload 1000s of videos each day. From time to time, YouTube users will upload television shows or clips from movies to share with others. If the YouTube member doesn't own the copyright for that content, there will probably be trouble.

Another controversy is actually brewing in the YouTube online community itself -- the conflict involving the online community and companies. YouTube has established partnerships with primary television studios like CBS, NBC and the BBC and with organizations like Universal Music, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. Notable celebs like Oprah Winfrey and Paris Hilton also have joined YouTube. Some members feel that these rich organizations and persons are squeezing out the average sponsor. They contend that average member videos are competing with individuals and organizations that have big budgets and extensive resources, and many users suggest that these companies and celebs are using underhanded methods to ensure their video clips get in the top of YouTube's various video listings.

There are many different ways YouTube members can communicate with one another. You are able to send private text messages or make a comment for everybody to see through a user's personal channel. You can even comment on personal videos only if the video's creator has turned off that feature.

Some users choose to turn off the comment feature in an effort to avert trolls -- people who leave insulting messages. Another annoying comment byproduct is comment spam. Some accounts seem to exist only so that the user can leave comments promoting a particular site or YouTube video in as many comment sections as possible. However, YouTube has provided users with an option to block specific accounts from commenting on videos.

Some members choose to keep every comment, even unwanted ones. That is because each comment on a video contributes to the video clip becoming one of YouTube's "most discussed" videos. Every time a video clip lands on the most discussed listing, it's featured on YouTube's videos section, which can result in a dramatic increase in viewers. On YouTube, it seriously is true that there's no such factor as bad publicity.

Users can actually leave video responses to another online video. The user wanting to comment movies himself or herself and uploads it to YouTube as a comment. It's possible for two or more members to engage in a video conversation or debate by uploading video replies to one another. YouTube has a Quick Capture tool which allows members to record a video using a Webcam and upload it to the web site using a single application, which is effective for video replies.
