Tried and Tested Ways
* Stop speaking the words aloud while you read. Vocalization decreases the speed of reading because your mouth needs time to pronounce each word. In the beginning, you may find that de-vocalization fastens your reading but slows your understanding. This will improve with practice.
* Form a habit of reading complete sentences, not word by word. When you spend more time on one word, you automatically decrease your reading speed. Start with reading word phrases, if not sentences. The ideal way is to try reading newspaper columns that contain only four to five words in a line. You'll learn how to read faster better this way.
* Stop re-reading. Fast readers hardly do this. Increase your concentration so that you don't find the need to re-read, which interrupts the flow of information to your brain.
* Skim the page before actually reading it. It lets your brain get a basic idea of what the text contains. You're already introduced to the topic. So when you start reading, your brain can easily assimilate the matter, as the text is not alien to it now. This helps you read faster.
You can also try the following techniques. They effectively show you how to read faster.
The Index Card Technique
Get an index card or a simple piece of paper. It should cover the entire page width. When you start to read, put this card along the width of the page. As you continue reading, move the index card or paper down in a way that only the line you're reading is visible to your eyes. This would effectively kick off your habit of re-reading because the card induces you to move forward. It gives you no chance to revert to the line already read.
The Hopping Technique
Let your hand hop over the line twice or thrice so that you read a cluster of words, not word by word. Focus on the words near your hand. Move your hand in an even pace to avoid missing out on text. If you skip words, your brain would automatically urge you to re-read, which again slows your speed of reading.
Speed reading is not something that people are born with. It is a learned skill. This means you too can be a speed reader. But, it requires efforts on your side. You need to spare time everyday for practicing to read quicker. Many people have tried the above techniques with amazing results.
One of the prerequisites of 'how to read faster' is concentration. If your mind is distracted, you cannot understand a word you're reading, even at a slower pace. Don't think anything else while trying to read faster. Forget about you surrounding. It is good to try this at a quiet corner of your house. Once you master the art of reading faster, you can read anywhere, anytime.
