Most kids get overwhelmed when they are assigned lockers and in this excitement they forget that these storage units have to be kept clean. Listed below are 4 tips that will help your child organize his locker unit and keep it organized.

• Heavy books should always be kept below lighter books and the same rule applies for large sized books. While organizing books, the books should be facing the student and not the other way around. In addition, the student’s name should be written on the book in legibly. If the locker unit has a shelf then necessary items can be organized neatly. Pens, markers and pencils should be kept in a pouch or a stand meant for stationary items. Items such as tapes, staplers and rulers should preferably be kept in a pouch.

• Most kids love decorating these storage units and aim to make their miniature cupboards at school as attractive as possible. While decorating these units, children should be encouraged to use tape and not glue. Since some schools have strict rules about decorating these storage units, remember to ask your child to find out these rules before decorating or personalizing his assigned locker.

• Although all the hallways in schools have trash cans, at times kids forget to throw trash in these cans. To keep school lockers clean, students can keep a small trash bag inside their locker. This trash bag should be hung using a magnet and should only be used for paper and other non biodegradable items.

• Locker units are not meant to be used as refrigerators or pantries. As far as possible your child should be encouraged not to store left over lunch and other bio degradable items in the assigned storage unit for more than a few hours. This will not only help keep the unit organized but also prevent stomach problems from eating food that has gone bad.

Note - Although using combination locks is safer than using pad locks, if your child cannot remember the combination of such locks, then you may want to give him a sturdy padlock to protect his belongings. Valuable items and cash should not be kept in these storage units especially if your child is sharing the unit with someone.
