Most people are aware that it isn’t good for your overall health to have high cholesterol levels. And as we get older there is more chance that we will develop higher levels as time goes on.

There are various ways that you can lower your cholesterol if you discover it is higher than it should be, but many people understandably don’t want to visit their doctor and end up going on medication. Taking tablets every day isn’t the ideal solution if you can tackle the problem naturally instead.

Fortunately you can do just that by taking several steps to reduce your cholesterol levels. Your diet is a big factor in this, and there are a number of foods you can eat that will help tackle the problem.

For example oats are good to eat as they only reduce the bad cholesterol you have in your bloodstream. You will probably know there are two types of cholesterol so it is obvious that you will want to hang on to the good stuff. Other similar items such as bran – or any whole foods that contain either of these ingredients – will do the same trick.

As you can see the idea is not to avoid fat altogether, but to focus on the good fats instead. Fish is a great example of this as it contains healthy fish oils. You’ve probably heard the idea of eating two portions of oily fish every week and this is why – it can help to reduce the bad cholesterol you have in your body. Some people recommend more servings than this, so if you love oily fish dig in!

Other foods are good for you in other ways. Watch out for foods which contain plant sterols. These have been proven to lower cholesterol in humans, so it makes sense to try and eat foods which have them in abundance. Typical examples would be fresh vegetables. Nuts are also good for you in this sense and have plenty of plant sterols in them. Fruits come in slightly under vegetables but they are still worth eating and indeed they are healthy in other ways too.

Of course regular exercise is also good for you and helps to reduce your cholesterol levels naturally. When combined with a good diet as shown above it can really enhance your wellbeing and general health. Just be sure to start slowly and build up from there if you aren’t used to getting around much.

We are always told that eating a healthy diet will see us live a healthier life. But it can be difficult to avoid temptation on occasion. But provided you keep those foods to a minimum and you focus on having whole foods, plenty of exercise and foods which are higher in plant sterols, you will feel better in the long run.

So don’t worry if you have reached a stage where your cholesterol is higher than it should be. You can take immediate steps to send it back in a healthier direction.
