We human beings function mainly due to our five senses i.e. ear, nose, eyes, tongue and skin. When these senses work properly, we call a person a normal human being. Just few days ago I went to an exhibition of schools where I come across many schools that had set up their stalls. I visited almost every stall and at last found one with very interesting theme to teach the toddlers. That particular school had developed variety of tools that actually appeal to the sensory system of the kids.
I saw two pieces of paper, one that was plain and the another that was rough. The teachers let the kids touch these papers so that they can practically experience the difference between plainness and roughness. Another tool that I saw was different color matching dies to teach the kids the basic colors like red, green, yellow and blue. Each color contained two dieses one of which is given to the kids to match with another same colored dies. This task let the kids’ visual senses to work.
Apart from these, there were number of other tools that really caught my attention. Preschools lay more emphasis on the proper sensory development of the kids. The parents sometime don’t recognize the importance of the development of kids’ senses properly, but if there is any hurdle in the functioning of any of the senses, the kids can demonstrate problems in reading and writing too. The kid’s psychologists have suggested some of the ways that help the parents and teachers to nurture their kids properly.
These are briefly discussed below:-
1. Lights, objects and pictures can teach the preschoolers about the visual sense organ and also help in make it stronger. Choosing objects of various colors and shapes can have good impact as they appeal to the kids’ visual sensory organ very rapidly. You can also draw different shapes like squares, rectangles or triangle in a thick chart paper, color these in different bright colors and cut these out. Then ask your child to pair the similar looking shapes so that they can develop the skill of thinking by themselves.
2. To teach your little ones about the differences between different smells, introduce them to different pleasant and unpleasant smells. Flowers, fruits and perfumes can introduce the kids to some good smelling objects. Moreover, if possible take your child to the market places where they can come across some unpleasant smells.
3. To develop the sense of hearing among the kids, let them try different sounds in varied volumes. But remember to set the volume in a particular level where your little one can resist it.
4. Allow the preschoolers to sample foods from each taste bud group. Kids can taste lemons for an example of a sour taste. Salted pretzel rods provide a salty experience. Dip salted pretzel rods in chocolate to let kids mix two tastes, salty and sweet, together.
5. Preschoolers can learn about their sense of touch by feeling different materials and textures. A collection of fabrics including fleece, burlap, silk or satin can be used to teach kids the difference between soft, rough and smooth. Take your children on a nature walk. Encourage them to pay close attention to the things that they see, hear, smell, taste, and feel on the walk.
