Maybe you think everything around you are out control but when you watch CNN, you will know the world is totally out of control. You have to clear that the golden rule of life has not changed, and it will never will: Stuffs happen. You can not control much of it. What you can control is that how you react to it and how much it can influence you. Here are some ways to gain back a little control when things feel out control in your world.
1. Write a list. There is nothing can put more control back into your hands than taking all the "to dos" in your mind and writing them down. Then develop a plan for how you will complete each one. For instance, if there is one things on your lists that is shopping for Christmas, then you can set a time, set a date, and a time limit to go shopping. If one stuff on your lists is to clean your house, break it into manageable parts. So you can clean your kitchen on Monday, and the bathrooms on Tuesday.
2. Build up tolerance to chaos by giving yourself small out-of-control experience. For instance, if you are the driver of the family car, have your partner drive when you all go out together next time. Ask someone else to periodically interrupt you, have your spouse to develop the plans for weekend without your input, turn over the bills paying to your spouse. These can help you learn accept being out of control.
3. Try to practice positive self-talk. It is great if there are somebody else will do this for you, but always you have to do this for yourself. Self-talk can be things like this, "I gonna be okay." "I can get over this" or "I have to give myself a few minutes at this moment and then I will make a plan to deal with this."
4. Spend time de-stressing before you fall into the maelstrom. Put your feet up, take deep breath, have a cup of tea. Letting yourself calm down is an area in which you do have control.
5. Create a perception which you have control. The researchers has found that the perception of control take much more importance role than actual control. For example, people can tolerate a hot room if they know they have the choice of turning down the heat. Come up with other little stuffs that you can do to let the out-of-control situations more manageable.
6. Iron some things. Ironing can be considered as the mindless activity that could provide very obvious results. You can turn a crumpled ball of fabric into a crisp garment, the sense of control you get will also carry into other areas of your life.
