I always have been a sucker for Texas gifts which celebrate Texas, the state where I was born. As a child, someone gave me my first of many Texas gifts, a map of the U.S. with the state of Texas in exaggerated scale compared to the rest of the lower 49. I kept it on my wall to remind me that I was born in a great place.

As I got older I was always on the lookout for Texas products that reminded me of Texas, whether they were key rings, "Texas-Size" novelties, books or songs about Texas. I would zero in on menu items that described their recipes as being Texas-themed, like chili or the barbeque beef brisket. I was always discovering new things about Texas to be proud of besides its sheer gargantuan size.
I have found that whenever a movie or TV show needs to have a generic American to move the plot along, they inevitably bring in a Texan. From John Wayne to Hank Hill, add a Texan as a character to your story and you'll bring a unique dynamic that will be instantly recognizable and plausible to your audience, at least if they are from Texas. In the state's fascinating history, outsize Texan personalities are the rule. From political dynasties to oil barons, Texans are glorified or lampooned, but think what you like, they never will be predictable or boring.
Texans like me share a communal pride in our Texas products like Texas Black Angus beef, ruby grapefruit from the Rio Grande Valley, and too many world-class barbeque sauces to count.
Generations of country music artists who hail from Texas or are merely inspired by it have written unforgettable songs about the Lone Star State for decades. Many of these songs, with their soulful or raucous lyrics, have become part of our national playlist of songs which best describe what it is to be an American. From lonesome cowpoke plaints to edgy alternative country, Texas music delivers.
From a pure design perspective, you can't go wrong with Texas gifts which feature the state flag's colors of red, white and blue. I know lots of people who have large Texas flags mounted on their living room or recreation room walls, and it looks good. Lucky for us, our state has a unique shape. Gifts like Texas-shaped cookie cutters are functional and fun.
Lots of people like to buy Texas products which they can wear, fitting themselves out in custom-designed cowboy boots, ten-gallon hats and bolo ties. If you're not Texan, good luck pulling it off. But as any Texan would tell you, if you want to be like a real Texan, just cowboy up and go for it.
