Like all other long running programs, employee referral programs also face the imminent danger of boredom setting in and employees losing the excitement or motivation to participate in the program. Even employee referral programs that are fairly successful, run the risk of dwindling participation with time as employees simply start losing interest in the program, which is why referral campaigns are needed at periodic intervals to keep employee interest in the referral program alive.
Employee referral campaigns are launched with the intention of capturing employee attention for a limited period of time and get them to perform desired action. As such the campaign needs to be marketed properly to create the right buzz and excitement that can motivate employees to take part in the campaign activity. But creating an employee referral campaign that is able to connect with employees is not an easy task. We have listed down below some basic ingredients that are needed for you to create an employee referral campaign that can engage with employees.
• First of all, a referral campaign should be launched with a specific objective in mind. All the communication material should be designed to communicate the central objective of the campaign so that employees are clear as to what is expected of them
• The referral campaign should be for a limited time period only and not keep running indefinitely. The period of the campaign should be based on what you are trying to achieve. If your objective is to fill a key position through the campaign, then a 1 -3 month campaign should be sufficient to get referrals, screen and interview shortlisted candidates and then discuss the terms of offer with the candidate to be hired.
• Ensure you have the required organizational support to make the referral campaign a success. Organizational support can be in the form of availability of senior team members to sponsor the campaign or availability of support staff to execute the desired campaign.
• Make the referral campaign fun and exciting to participate in. Choose a theme for the campaign that is in synch with both the campaign objective as well as resonates well with employees. For instance you can make 2 departments compete with each other on who can generate the most referrals that are interviewed etc.
• Lastly, awards play an important role in any campaign activity and getting your awards right is central to the success of any campaign. Choose awards that are universally acceptable irrespective of gender, race and caste. For instance tickets to a football game might appeal to only a certain section of employees whereas tickets to a concert or a theatre will find universal acceptance.
Get these key elements right in your referral campaign and you are sure to get employees talking about how much fun it was to participate in the referral campaign and will all sorts of prizes.
