While there are around 250 diseases that can infect people through food, there are two major, overarching types of food poisoning. One way is "infectious agents" like viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Another ways is through "toxic agents." These include mushrooms, foods that are properly or fully prepared, and foods that have not been cleaned completely and still contain things like pesticide.

One of the biggest ways to overcome food poisoning is to take some form of charcoal. Charcoal is a natural remedy in that it neutralizes the poisons inside the body to twice its own weight. Thus a piece of burnt toast can go a long way to helping settle your stomach and end the symptoms more quickly.

Generally food poisoning affects a group of people. If you have consumed the same foods with a group of people and now you are all suffering from the same gastronomic distress then you may be suffering from food or fluid poisoning. Parasites are the least common form of food poisoning, but they are contracted in the same ways as bacterial and viral cases. The symptoms tend to be less intense than viral or bacterial food poisoning but last much longer. Again, most food borne illnesses or food poisoning cases can be avoided by taking a few simple precautions such as consistent and thorough hand washing procedures, sanitary practices for surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen environments, as well as taking the time to make sure meats are fully cooked and raw materials from animals are handled in a sanitary manner.
