If you’re someone who believes that teachers only teach subjects and materials from textbooks, you are under wrong impression. To effectively lead a modern-day classroom, a teacher is required to take on several roles. You can think of the roles that teachers juggle daily like a variety of hats stacked up high on the head of an individual. Educators must balance carefully and carry the weight of each hat without them blowing over or toppling down to the ground. We cannot simply give our roles or “hats” to someone else because we are responsible as the head of our classroom.
Some of these hats include being a comedian, ringmaster, provider, counsellor, event planner, detective, nurse, referee, test administrator, role model and content expert. We can be all of these things in one day or just a handful, but it proves that teaching is not as simple as it is often perceived to be from an outsider’s perspective.
So, what does it take to succeed and be a great teacher?
It’s important to have strong core values and reflect back on WHY you wanted to become an educator in the first place… to help kids and teach them new things. We should strive to be someone who is truly passionate about working with children and helping them to reach their full potential, pushing past students limits and encouraging them to take on harder challenges.
How can I make my life easier as an educator who wears many hats?
As teachers, our time is valuable and limited due to all of the planning, marking and different roles we take on. We can make our lives easier by having a variety of prepared teaching materials under our belt so we can focus on the many other aspects of the job. Fortunately, teachers have been blessed with many wonderful educational websites that have lesson plans for teachers that require minimal prep time and are easy to incorporate in the classroom.
If you’re searching for primary teaching resources, the Resources for Teaching Website has a great library of worksheets, lessons, task cards, posters and activities for many subjects. All of their materials are digital and can be downloaded straight away for easy access to teachers across the globe. These resources are wonderful for busy teachers who need more time to be present with their students in the classroom and casual teachers who need to pull a lesson together quickly.
Educators are given the difficult task of creating a differentiated environment where all children can be successful. We take on many roles and responsibilities that don’t always go noticed, therefore using available tools that can help us wear the different hats should be encouraged. Teachers are wonderful, they make students feel special and at the end of the day no matter how many hats are stacked on our heads… we put our chins up and wear them all with pride.
