It can take up to 2 years to get the final answer on your Social Security Disability (SSD) application. Ugh! We understand that a 2-year wait is more than frustrating; so, we’ll use this article to both explain the process and let you know what you can do, to speed things along.

Your role in the SSD process is an important one and, even if your disability award is delayed by months or even years, when you are finally approved, you’ll receive a lump sum back payment to make up for the delay.

The Social Security Disability Application Steps

For most folks, there are usually 3 main steps, or hoops that you must jump through, in the SSD application process.

• First, the initial application.

• Second, the reconsideration, an appeal.

• Third, the hearing, which is also an appeal.

Most cases are denied at the initial application and reconsideration levels. However, those numbers change drastically at the hearing level, where 60% to 80% of all cases are approved.

What You Can Do to Move Your Case Along

You can do a lot to make your case stronger and get heard more quickly.

• Work with a Social Security Disability attorney, who can guide you along the process as well as provide case specific such as what to put on your application and what documentation to attach.

• Make sure your application is complete, legible, and includes all requested information. If in doubt, include more information.

• If additional information is requested, provide it immediately.

• Always appeal within the 60-day window. If you don’t, your case will be dismissed and you will have to apply all over again, starting in the back of the line. Then, it’s likely your disability award is 2 more years from the new application date, instead of 2 years from when you originally applied.

• Appeal right away. Even though you’re given 60 days to appeal – 65 days, including mailing time – don’t use it. The longer you wait the longer the process will take.

• All along the way, do what your Social Security Disability lawyer asks you to do.

- This may include providing work history information or a full list of medical professionals – or – writing down exactly how your life is limited because of your illness or injury.

- Your attorney will likely ask you to wear business casual clothes to the hearing and to show up on time.

• If you qualify, show “dire circumstances” and request an expedited hearing.
