Lighting has become an essential activity of all of us when and where we do not get the natural light. The light energy is one of the most used energy for the modern people. Can any one of us think about an evening or night when no lights are lit? Every place requires lighting of different type and the depending on the lights used, the atmosphere gets changed. Some places need bright lights such as the study rooms, offices, theater halls and in some places the dim lights are needed specially in the bed room, corridors etc. Lights are used for our gardens, storehouses, garages etc. There are various types of lights which are used such as incandescent light, fluorescent lights, compact fluorescent lights etc.

The fluorescent lights are used by most of the people because of their bright glow. Thought the light emitted by them is brighter than any other source but these lights do not get heated up too much as compared to the ordinary lights. The basic mechanism behind all the sources of light is the same. Light, which is a type of energy, appears in the form of very tiny packets. The energy is released by the atoms. Atoms release the light photons when these get excited. Various sources of lighting have various mechanisms for making the electrons of the atoms excited so that they release the light photons which are various units of lights.

In some light sources, the atoms are excited by simple heating and in some the heating is done by the use of chemical reactions and the color of the lights emitted depends on how the electrons are excited. The fluorescent lights have a central filament which is in a sealed glass tube. This tube has mercury and argon which is in low pressure. The tube also has phosphor powder as a coating inside the glass. There are two electrodes inside the tube connected with a wire to an electrical circuit. When the electrodes get electrical energy the electrons starts migrating thus the mercury inside the tube changes to the gas. Collisions between these mercury atoms and charged atoms take place thus light photons are released which are not visible to us. The phosphor which is inside the tube now emits light as it gets exposed to light and it is white in color. Lighting of different colors is made possible when various combinations of phosphors are used.
