Our Eating habits & appetite are strongly hit by stress. It puts a strong impact on our eating habits, appetite & food cravings. Stress causes overeating & weight gain. Small meals or Snacks after short time spans are more better than overeating at a single time.

Our Eating habits & appetite are strongly hit by stress. It puts a strong impact on our eating habits, appetite & food cravings. It is seen that mostly the people either eat too much or too little while they are under the effect of Stress. Both these conditions are not good for your body.
Stress influences the choice of food, the digestion & absorption of food from the nutrients. Just imagine, if your are stressed out then all these all the involuntary actions will be hampered. Poor diet is responsible for stress, which, in turn, leads to a poor diet. A lot many eat food to get relief from stress. For them food is like a stress buster & they tend to overeat in urge to feel delighted or to cope up with stress.
Eating Habits in Stress can result in following types of eating disorders :
1. Emotional Eating. Stress can lead to emotional eating wherein the person eats without an actual appetite simply for coping with the feelings of anxiety or nervousness. In this case, either you overeat or don't eat at all until the dinner time & then eat in excess at a single instance. Emotional eating is mainly a result of a bad day at work or mood swings, sadness, frustration, etc
2. Restrictive Eating. In this type of eating people restrict their food menu. They restrict themselves from eating certain type of foods which causes stress. Thus, the body is deprived of some essential nutrients & foods. Such type of eaters are set themselves up for binging, lifetime weight fluctuations & stress-affected eating.
3. Cortisol Cravings: Stress can cause increased levels of cortisol aka the the stress hormone in the body. Though this hormone is beneficial for the body but as everything in excess is bad likewise its excess levels can be problematic for the body. The increased levels of cortisol can provoke carvings for salty & sweet foods again leading to unnecessary eating.
4. Nervous Energy: It is often observed that in conditions like anxiety or stress, people are more prone to become orally fidgety. This induces nail biting or teeth grinding & overeating even when you actually do not feel hungry. A lot many people much on chips or gurgle some soft drinks or soda to make their mouths busy. This will actually deviate their feelings of nervousness.
5. Stuffing Emotions: Its amazing to know that people also overeat in order to calm their uncomfortable emotions. Many people are quite shy & uncomfortable with face-off. To deal with the variety of frustrations they eat in excess. Food deviates the focus off of anger, fear, anxiety, resentment and other types of emotions.
A Continual stress leads to increased levels of cortisol hormone in your body accelerating feelings of hunger. It is interesting to note that cortisol is responsible for cravings for foods like sugar and high fat foods. In a nutshell, Stress affects our eating a lot. As a remedy , we should try to be calm & relaxed, manage our tasks properly so that it doesn't cause stress. Its is better to Small meals or Snacks after short time spans rather than overeating at a single time. Don't take stress & enjoy your eating !
