It is obvious from the name of hydro-therapy that water is used in some therapeutic kind of way. This technique is not new to mankind and has been discovered many centuries ago and was particularly common amongst the Chinese, Japanese and the Romans. Even then water had been used to treat many illnesses and health conditions.

In the modern times however, water is used particularly in saunas and health spas as part of a muscle relaxing therapy. This article is going to shed some light on the different ways that it is used.

As a Muscle Toner

Even though water is only applied to our outer body, yet it does a lot more than just toning up the skin and muscles. It can even affect the internal organs to improve the digestive and immune system and to stimulate the circulation throughout the body thereby also reducing if there are any aches and pains. Therefore water can be used to reduce stress from the body.

The Different Techniques

There are various techniques of hydrotherapy; some of the common ones are mentioned below.

1. One particularly unique technique is the cold rubbing. It is usually used to tone up the body. If you want to do it at home then all you need to do is to take some cold water in a large bowl. Take a piece of linen and dip in it. Take it out, wring it and then use it to rub the body. After this procedure get in the bed until the body is dried and has become warm.

2. Another technique is known as Douche. It is a very gentle technique and involves the use of hand shower or a hose. Water is supposed to gently flow on the skin in one direction. Because there are different kinds of douches, therefore, the direction of water differs in each. For example in the knee douche you can allow the water to go from foot towards the knee and then back. These kinds of douche are good for headaches, high blood pressure, bruises and even sleep problems.

3. A similar douche technique is the Thigh Douche in which the water goes even more upward towards the thighs. This is also used to treat the same issues, however additionally it can also improve circulation.

4. Lower Trunk Douche involves the use of the complete lower body and is good for treating the swelling of major organs like kidney and Gall bladder.

5. Arm Douche is good for treating anxiety, headaches, heart problems and rheumatism. In this technique the water is led from the outer side of the hand upwards and then back.

6. In the Upper Trunk Douche, water is again led from the hand upwards but going past the shoulder to the chest. This can help with throat difficulties and also to improve cardiovascular activity.

7. Face Douche is great for facial problems like headaches, toothaches and even eye problems. In this technique the water should be led in a triangle shape starting from the right temple going towards the chin, then upwards to the left temple and then back across the forehead to the right temple again.

8. Steam bath is also one way of hydrotherapy and is also one of the most common ways. Steam can be good for a lot of things like boosting the immune system of the body, helping in circulation, stabilizing the heart flow and even hormone production. The advisable time to taking steam is 15 – 20 minutes.

9. There are techniques known as the Immersion Baths. If you dip yourself till navel in a tub of rising hot water that starts from the foot then it is going to help you with problems like common cold. The temperature should reach till 103 degrees. Similarly a cold immersion bath in which only the feet till calf are dipped, should be good for sleep disorders and headaches.

10. Wraps are good for treating people with fever or inflammation. The person is wrapped in a towel that has been dipped in cold water and then wrung. Once it is done then do it with a dry linen cloth and the person is then allowed to rest for an hour. If the wrap doesn’t feel warm enough then it is better to use a hot water bottle in addition.
