If you are a developer, then all you really need in order to create an app is a great idea, a computer and plenty of time; the most expensive of these is your time as even a skilled app creator needs at least a couple of months to develop, test and distribute an app. You also need the appropriate tools such as the iOS SDK or Android SDK app development environment.
Naturally you need an appropriate skill set. It you are developing an iPhone app then you will need to be able to code in Objective-C and if you are targeting Android phones then you will need Java. Both of these object orientated languages should be quite accessible to anyone with basic coding skills; the best way is to start making something simple and getting it to work.
So, you have made a great app, and now you need to make some money out of it to at least compensate you for all those months of hard work. You will need to sell it through the Apple or Android markets and you will need to persuade people to download it.
One way of doing this is to create a demo version that can be downloaded for free along with a full version for which you charge money. Many developers have found that this can be the key and it was the mechanism by which iShoot, a game created by a lone developer, moved from sales of around 20 a day to sales that generated profits of over $22,000 a day.
Not everybody can create viral apps such as iShoot and Angry Birds. One reason is that there is not a magic formula that can be tapped into; the road to success is a winding one. However, there are other ways to monetise apps that can generate useful income streams. Making money from mobile advertising is one that has huge potential. The free version of Angry Birds that includes a bar that displays mobile ads now makes more money than the paid for version. However you don’t need a runaway success like Angry Birds to make significant income. Many amateur app developers have found that by creating just a bunch of reasonable apps and joining up with a mobile advertising network they can generate enough income to give up their day jobs.
Mobile phone advertising is the next big thing in marketing and it is growing at a rapid rate. Substantial profits are being generated already and can only increase exponentially in the future. Now is the time to make the best of it.
