The major difference between conventional systems and the advance wastewater treatment system is that the latter treats wastewater further before releasing it into the soil. These systems make use of treatment steps that are carefully designed and they maintain conditions that are conducive to providing advanced treatment consistently.

The advanced treatment in these systems reduces the strength of the wastewater even further. It removes more FOG, or fats, oils and greases, and other solids from the effluent. Depending on how advanced the wastewater system is configured and designed, there might even be a reduction in the nutrients or pathogens of the wastewater thus treated.

Most of these advanced treatment systems function as a “train”, wherein there are series of logical processes that treat the water to a certain level. These advanced treatment systems usually require maintenance once or twice in a year so that they function properly throughout the year.

Advance wastewater treatment plants function in two stages usually: Primary Treatment and Pre-treatment or Advanced Treatment.

Primary Treatment: The primary treatment of sewage waste separates the fats, solids, oils and greases. This is an important step in waste water treatment as it separates and removes those parts of the waste which cannot be removed effectively by the bacteria present in the effluent and the advance wastewater system. If these solids are not removed at this primary stage, they would clog up the system in further stages of treatment. Any residential septic system will have primary treatment as an important process in the treatment of waste water.

Pre-Treatment Technology or Advanced Treatment: This step takes primary treatment further and reduces FOG and solid concentration to a higher amount. Nutrients might also be lost in the process of advanced treatment. There are two ways of incorporating this step of treatment into a normal treatment plant.

One can either add a separate and different component to the system that is before the drain field component and just beyond the septic tank.

One can also add a special compartment for advanced treatment of wastewater within the same processing tank. One of these compartments would then serve for primary treatment, and the other would conduct advanced treatment.

Finally, advanced waste water treatment uses a variety of technologies. These include sequencing batch reactors, media filters and aerobic treatment units, depending on the kind of waste water treatment preferred by the household or the concerned area.
