Homeless shelters are often seen as one of the first steps in the recovery process for homeless people. In reality, it could be argued that outreach programs are the very first step, but emergency shelters are an early and highly critical and important stage nevertheless. From homeless shelters, people will tend to move on to more permanent hostels and the aim during this time is to help combat the problems that led the person to become homeless in the first place.

Emergency Shelters

Living on the streets is physically, emotionally, and mentally dangerous. Many people suffer from serious illnesses due to being out in harsh conditions throughout the year and the streets are far from a safe place to sleep in any town or city. Emergency homes shelters are the first step away from these circumstances and they tend to offer support as well as GP and other services to help the homeless get off the streets and back into everyday life.

Assessment

The needs of the individual are assessed while they are in homeless shelters. A lot of homeless people are able to live in more permanent housing but do not have the means to do so. Benefits can be claimed that will help to provide this more permanent solution but without some form of assistance and without an address to use, it can be impossible for people to claim these benefits.

GP Support

Homeless shelters may also provide GP support which can prove highly important. Homeless people tend to suffer illnesses following long periods of time living on the streets, surviving on extremely poor or virtually non-existent diets and also through drink and drugs which are associated with the homeless community. A GP can check patients out and provide any medical assistance that might be needed.

Homeless Shelters

Following admission into homeless shelters, many homeless people move on to the more permanent solution of living in hostels. These can provide housing for as long as six to twelve months and during this time, homeless people are provided with the support and assistance that is needed in order to become dependence free or to find a way to beat poverty, find their own home, and even find employment.
