The long months of winter are a popular time for people to do DIY home improvements, and this year will be no exception. However, DIY does not always go as planned and you should check your home insurance cover to ensure you are fully protected.

Warmer months aren't the only times to work on home improvement projects. However, they can sometimes seem like the most logical time to do so. After all, who wants to paint their house or put on a new roof when snow is falling? That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't many projects you can tackle in the winter. In fact, many jobs are well suited for working indoors, and don't require you to be outside in the elements, thus can be pursued in the colder months.
It's a good idea to try your hand at a little DIY - but it's not so smart to overestimate your abilities. According to a recent survey, around one in ten DIY enthusiasts will suffer an accident that could eventually cost a large amount to put right. Yet despite this, less than half of policy holders have the necessary protection in place in their home insurance policies in the form of an accidental damage extension.
It's vital to check your policy before carrying out any work to ensure you are covered. Check the level of accidental damage on offer from your home insurance provider and make sure any structural changes won't lead to your policy being declared void. Some parts of the home such as sinks, baths, ceramic hobs and fixed glass in doors are included in most building insurance policies. However, many householders need additional accidental damage cover to protect against common DIY disasters, such as drilling through water pipes, spilling paint on carpets or putting feet through ceilings. Additionally, if you live in a new home you should also check that any work you carry out will not invalidate the building guarantee.
Take extra care when using power tools and when working with heights. Also ensure that the ladder and scaffolding you use is secure. According to a leading insurance company, a shocking 30% of people either injure themselves or someone else whilst attempting DIY. Many homeowners get a shock when they discover that their home insurance does not cover accidental damage for when their DIY goes wrong.
Home insurance is something that all homeowners should have. It doesn't have to be expensive, and getting the best rates doesn't have to be a hassle. By shopping around on the internet you will be able to find sites where you can compare the quotes of several different companies at the same time. For those who already have insurance policies, or need multiple insurance, one option could be to get all the insurance you need from one agent or company. Not only could this work out much cheaper than buying several different policies, it may also save you a lot of aggravation and extra bills.
So before you get bitten by the DIY bug this winter make sure your policy covers all eventualities, otherwise it could prove to be a very expensive exercise. And, if in doubt, get an expert in to do the job.
