Assuring that when your child is home alone, they eat something other than junk food.
When your kids go back to school, there are days when they get home before you, and if they are a certain age, they definitely want to be allowed to wait for you alone instead of having a babysitter take care of them in those two or three hours. Sooner or later every child should be trusted to stay home alone, but just because you trust them doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of them in your absence, so have them call you when they get home, and always make sure there is something healthy waiting for them to eat.

If left to themselves, most kids would simply reach for chips or candy bars in place of their afternoon snack and would be happy to do so. Unfortunately such a snack has no nutritional value, and in fact can do some harm providing excessive amounts of fat, salt or sugar, and that is why you need to talk to your child about proper nutrition and their eating habits. Most importantly, tough, you should just never leave the house without making sure there is a healthy snack waiting for your kid to get back home from school.

For a child that likes to be involved in cooking and baking, a do it yourself small meal is a perfect solution. On one hand it will be fun to put together a pita bread sandwich or a turkey and avocado wrap, and on the other hand your child will be able to choose from healthy ingredients and put together a combination that suits them on a particular afternoon. Simply make sure there is a selection of meats and cheeses, as well as sandwich vegetables in the fridge, and that there are different options to keep the sandwich together, from pita bread to whole wheat English muffin.

Some kids love to experiment in the kitchen while others can’t figure it all out. If that’s your child, pre-made meals are the way to go for you. Instead of store-bough frozen meals or salads, however, try to prepare home made portions that can safely wait in the fridge. Whether it’s leftover pasta or a grilled chicken salad, simply put it in a container and attach a post it with serving instructions. For anything that goes in the microwave, not the time to reheat it for and don’t forget about some warnings regarding what to reheat it in and how to deal with it afterwards. For foods that have to get mixed together, put a short list of ingredients and your child will figure out the rest.

In addition to leaving to-be-assembled or premade foods for your child, consider adding something sweet on the side. A juicy apple, a small dark chocolate bar or a handful of dried berries will take care of your kid’s sweet tooth and prevent them from hitting the pantry, while at the same time it won’t do any harm being that it’s portioned and consisting of healthy ingredients. And if you leave both a proper meal and a treat, you can stop worrying about your kid bingeing out on junk food when you’re not there.
