Dry and itchy skin is an issue that troubles many of us in our daily life. Occurrence of dry skin is mainly caused by reduced oil production by the oil glands, skin disease, nutrient inadequacy and environmental factor such as humid, cold weather. While itching may result due to skin disease, poor hygiene, insect bites, allergies to food, pets and plants etc. Dryness in skin occurs most during the winter season, when humidity is low, while itching may happen due to different reasons.
The common prone areas to dryness problem are lower arms, abdomen, chest, cheeks, thighs and area around the eyes. Itching may occur to the particular irritated area or on the whole body depending on the cause. Dryness of skin results into tightening of skin after wash, cracks and scaliness in the skin etc. And the reoccurrence of itching constantly can harm the skin, making it more painful and sore.
As itchy and dry skin is a regular problem faced by most of us, using costly cosmetics is not cost effective and a secure solution to this issue. Best alternative in this situation is to go for the home remedies as they are cost effective, easily accessible, have no side effect and provide speedy relief. Some of the best home remedies are:
1- Fill your bath tub with water and add one quarter milk in it. Add few teaspoons of oatmeal, baking soda and stir it well. Take bath in the solution, it will soothe your skin from dryness and itching problems; as milk contains moisture and other soothing ingredients, it will assist in reducing itching of the skin considerably.
2- Drink plenty of water everyday. Consumption of at least 8-10 glasses of mild warm water will keep your skin hydrated both from outside and inside, thus relieving you from dryness and itching.
3- Apply slices of cucumber to the itchy and dry area of your skin. Juice of cucumber is very soothing and adds cooling effect to the skin besides keeping the skin moisturized.
4- Application of Aloe Vera, lemon juice, vitamin E oil and cod liver oil to the itchy and dry area is a very effective remedy. Massage the face slowly and gently in full small circles around the affected area to get relief.
5- Mix equal amount of cinnamon powder and honey and make a fine paste. Apply this paste to the affected areas to stop dryness and itching problem.
6- Take Neem bath or apply Neem oil to the dry and itchy portion, so as to get quick relief.
7- Make a smooth paste using two teaspoon milk powder, 1 teaspoon honey and 1 teaspoon egg yolk. Apply this paste to dry and itchy area for about 15-20 minutes. Wash your face using cold water and daub lightly and gently using clean towel.
8- Another very effective home remedy is the use of lemon. Mix one teaspoon of avocado oil to 1 teaspoon of lime juice and apply this mixture on your face and other affected areas. Then wash your face with cold water.
