Jock itch, medically referred to as tinea cruris is a widespread fungal skin infection caused by a class of fungi called dermatophytes. This infection, also known as ringworm infection of the groin, mainly occurs in the genital area, anus, and inner thigh area of the body and has been noted to be more prevalent in men than in women, especially among those who sweat plenty. Overweight people and those with poor immunity system also have more chances of getting this fungal infection. Other risk factors include wearing tight-fitting or unwashed undergarments and history of atopic dermatitis.

It is characterized by the occurrence of ring-shaped rashes that are usually itchy and red in color. There may also be a burning sensation in the infected areas and skin peeling or flaking in the groin. It is a contagious infection and can be passed through shared items like clothes and towels or through sex with an infected person. The rashes can be worsened by walking or doing exercises. However, jock itch is not a serious disease, but can be very annoying and troublesome. This fungal infection is typically treated with either prescription or over-the-counter medications. Home remedies are also a good option for treating the infection

Garlic, with its antifungal and antibacterial properties, is an excellent remedy for jock itch. Crush garlic into a paste and rub it over the affected area. Internal consumption of garlic is also useful to combat the symptoms of this infection. Mix equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water and apply it to the jock itch. Another way to treat this infection is to spread a mixture of honey and cinnamon over the affected area. Dandruff shampoos are considered as good home remedies for jock itch. Most of these shampoos include antifungal ingredients and therefore have the ability to cure the signs and symptoms of the fungal infections.

Tea tree oil, a well known natural antifungal and antiseptic agent, also has the potential to treat the symptoms of jock itch, including burning and itching. After cleaning the area, apply tea tree oil onto the rashes with a cotton ball. Do this two times daily. Continue to use tea tree oil for minimum five days after the rashes have gone in order to completely cure jock itch. Salt bath is another effective home remedy for this condition. Add one and a half cups of table salt to warm bath water and immerse yourself for at least 15 minutes. It is recommended to take salt bath two times a day.

Soak a teaspoon of sliced ginger root and a teaspoon of dried thyme in a cup of warm water. Keep it aside for a few minutes. When it cools down, apply on the infected area using a cotton ball. Home remedies for jock itch also include avoiding sugar, yeast, alcohol, and carbohydrates. People with jock itch are also advised to bathe daily, wear clean undergarments, keep the genital area dry and clean, and avoid sharing personal item, such as towels, and clothing.
