Hypotension or low blood pressure may be defined as the unusual drop of blood pressure (i.e. the force blood exerts on artery walls) in the arteries during and after each heart beat. It indicates that the heart, brain and other major organs are not getting enough blood supply. The systolic pressure, if drops to 90 mm of mercury or below and the diastolic pressure, if drops to 60 mm of mercury or below, the condition is referred to as hypotension or low blood pressure. Hypotension can be of the following types:

1. Orthostatic hypotension or postural hypotension - This occurs when a sudden change in body position or posture takes place. For instance, if a person suddenly changes from lying down to standing, he or she may experience orthostatic hypotension. This state of hypotension stays for only few seconds or minutes.

2. Postprandial hypotension - When orthostatic hypotension follows the consumption of food, it is called postprandial hypotension.

3. Nuerally mediated hypotension (NMH) - This type occurs due to miscommunication between heart and brain. It is triggered by prolonged standing.

Hypotension produces symptoms like dizziness, nausea, thirst, blurred vision, fainting, rapid, shallow breathing, depression, sleepiness, fatigue, cold and pale skin, lack of concentration etc. Hypotension is caused by factors like pregnancy, heart problems like low heart rate, valve problem, heart failure and heart attack, endocrine problems like low blood sugar, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and Addison’s disease, dehydration, alcohol intake, blood loss due to injury or internal bleeding, severe infection or septicemia, severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, Vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies and medications like diuretics, beta-blockers, alpha-blockers, antidepressants, pain killers, medicines used for surgery, Parkinson’s disease medications, heart medications etc.
