You have decided to set up a home business. But do you really know what you are getting yourself into? If your business is product based, this will entail production (or sourcing of the item/s), marketing, and finance. If it is a service you will be rendering, organization and scheduling will be required, together with the marketing and finance. Are you up it?
A lot of people dream of going into a home-based business thinking that this will relieve them of the tiring daily travel to work, their nagging boss, and office environment filled with intrigues. True enough, if you will be working from home, you will not be exposed to these situations. You determine your schedule, you are your own boss, and there are no co-workers to sow intrigues.
But starting a home business is not without its difficulties. You will have to determine what type of business to go into. This will depend on your knowledge and skills as well as your material resources. Then a feasibility study will have to be made to determine the viability of the venture. And projections should not be limited to short term. For sure, you do not intend to be in business only for a few months, so medium and long term forecasts will have to be made. Sourcing of funds will have to be considered if you do not have ample finances for the project.
Upon start-up, marketing will have to be done. You may have the best product or service, but if people do not know you exist, your home business is likely to fail. Then there is the matter of recording your revenues and expenses. Failure to do so will put you at a loss, regarding how good (or bad) your business is doing. Also, these data will allow you to fine-tune your operation in order to improve your bottom line.
You will also need a fallback position in case your initial efforts lead to losses. Do you still pursue the venture with some adjustments? Or do you opt to bail out and cut your losses? Not all businesses succeed, so you should be ready to deal with failure as well.
All these may dampen your enthusiasm to engage in home business. The fact is that entrepreneurship is not for everyone. Otherwise every Tom, Dick, and Harry could have become a businessman, made lots of money, and ended up wealthy. But such is not the case.
If you are an introvert and you are uncomfortable dealing with customers, partners, suppliers, and financiers, going into business may not be for you. But that should not stop you from being an investor or being a limited partner working from the backroom. But for sure, you cannot engage in business on your own.
At the same time, a risk-averse individual may find it difficult to go into business, since he will put more emphasis on the risks rather than the returns. In so doing he is most likely to forego of business opportunities for fear of failure and losses. Studies show that entrepreneurs are risk-neutral. Needless to say, Home Business is not for everybody. So before going into it, ask yourself the question – are you ready to become an entrepreneur?
