The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra has been Arizona’s only full-time professional orchestra since 1947. Over the past fifteen years, The Phoenix Symphony has produced three recordings which have charted on the Billboard’s Classical Music Charts. Piper Music Director of The Phoenix Symphony, has been recognized for by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for the way he passionately advocates for concerts that connect orchestras to its audience.

A hallmark of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra is that it is strongly engaged in the Phoenix community by offer a variety of offerings to appeal to different audiences and educational outreach to encourage young people at schools and neighborhood groups to pursue their passions about music through their Classroom Concert Series.

The Phoenix Youth Symphony began in 1947 as a way to raise money to form a community orchestra which later became the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. Today, The Youth Symphony Orchestra supports the Symphonette Orchestra and Youth Orchestra, both nationally-recognized full symphonic, performing orchestras with approximately 100 members each. It also supports the Symphonic Winds, String Orchestra, Music Memory Program and the Young Musicians’ Competition. Last year was the 50th Anniversary of the Music Memory Program, cultural enrichment program designed to enhance understanding and appreciation of symphonic music for grades three to six.

The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra is housed in the multi-purpose performing arts Symphony Hall which is part of the Phoenix Civic Plaza. Symphony Hall is also home to the Arizona Opera and the Ballet Arizona, as well as hosting a variety of Broadway touring companies, dance productions and entertainers. It is accessible by a METRO Rail station. Recently, the Phoenix Symphony teamed with the Phoenix Theatre for the first time to present a semi-staged concert performance of the Broadway musical The Music Man at Symphony Hall to celebrate the Phoenix Theatre’s 90th Anniversary. They will collaborate on two more concerts in the future.
