History of Portland

It is a beautiful city located in the Northwest part of United States where the two natural water bodies meet with each other. The river Willmatte and Columbia. It falls in the state of Oregon which itself is famous. It is a populous city with almost every important thing that a big city must have in it to make it a famous city.

Its development was started in 1851 and since then it is getting larger and larger.

As its geography is concerned it is extended to a little towards south and also towards west. Its governmental system is being taken care of the mayor and four other commissioners posted there. It is a city that is very less spoiled by the mankind and is least polluted due to the vast plantation that spreads over the city. It is also said that it is the most planted city of United States and comes on the second number all over the world. As the climate is concerned it is a bit warm and dry in summer but not too hot and moderate winters with pleasant weather. Its atmosphere and climate is very good for roses, so there are many types of roses grown here by the natives.

The city where it is present today is not a new site known to the people. It is known to the people since 19th century. It was known as a clear patch on the bank of the river Willmatte. Many sea travelers used it as the stop by place on there journey to Fort Vancouver. The first man who saw some potential in the place and decided to set a settlement for the people was William Overton. He along with a lawyer Massachusetts claimed an area and started to clear it for the settlement. After that he shared it half with another person named Asa Lovejoy. Overton his sold his half claim to Francis W. Pettygrove. They both wanted to give this new town a name that resembled to the home town. As they both had a same choice so it was done by tossing a coin three times and Pettygrove won that toss.

In the beginning it was passed on to many other people along with the properties and the city flourished in a great way. The number of inhabitants increased a great deal in those times to approximately eight hundred. Initially the city has no good facilities. It was known as the filthiest and unmanaged city of the 20th century. At that time it was the largest settlement of the Pacific Northwest and had the facilities like hotels, bars, shops. Even there was a newspaper named Oregonian that used to publish weekly. It was a good business center due to the port and rail track that was present between Portland and Seattle. Trade was the main business that time. With passing of time it merged with different small towns like Albania, East Portland, Linnton and St. Johns.
